How to Survive Finals Week

  1. Plan out your meals ahead of time. Creating a meal plan for the week will keep you fed and energized. Having one less thing to worry about can also reduce some stress. Who wants to be trying to figure out where to eat when you can’t even figure out question one of the practice exam? Need some pointers on meal planning? Check out this post from a few weeks ago!
  2. Make a study schedule. While you’re coming up with a meal plan, go ahead and create a study schedule as well. This will keep you organized and make sure you have enough time to study for every exam. Want to make it more fun? Color-code it with your favorite, brightest colors to help keep everything straight.
  3. Eat a healthy breakfast. Jumpstarting your metabolism early on will help you stay focused throughout the day. Plus, who doesn’t love a good yogurt parfait?
  4. Choose a good studying location. While campus can get crowded during finals week, it’s important to find a study environment that works for you. If you can’t be productive if you’re around your friends, don’t study with them. If the second floor of King isn’t for you, don’t attempt to work there. Throw on some comfy clothes and find a quiet spot that is most your style and you’re set to crush that studying! As far as dining locations go, Maplestreet Station is a good study spot. If you study best in your dorm room, grab a meal to-go from Garden Market or load up on healthy study snacks at Market Street at MacCracken.
  5. Try meditating. Meditating for just 10 minutes can help you destress and focus on the task at hand. There are a bunch of apps for guided mediation and Spotify has a few playlists as well. If you want more tips on how to meditate and the benefits of practicing mediation, read this post!
  6. Workout. Much like meditation, exercise can help you clear your mind, destress, and re-energize you after a grueling study session. Endorphins released during your workout will perk you up, and get you ready for the next exam.
  7. If all else fails, coffee is your friend. Just make sure you’re also drinking a TON of water so you don’t get dehydrated and keep the caffeine intake under control to avoid getting jittery. Green tea is a great alternative.
  8. Let it go. Once the exam is over, it’s over. Don’t let the stress overwhelm you! Treat yourself after a hard exam with your favorite sweet treat, like ice cream from Miami Ice!

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane

As the semester winds down, make sure to really take it all in before you leave campus. Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry. We’ve created a list of the top places you must visit on your stroll down memory lane.

  1. Your Old Favorite Dining Hall
    Take a trip to your old favorite dining hall and get all you care to eat like it’s first semester freshman year again.
  2. Dividends Salad
    Everyone loves the Miami University exclusive sweet herb dressing. Throw it on some of Trader Green’s fresh greens and salad fixings and snap a pic!
  3. Wing Wednesday
    Whether you’re getting your wings fix at Wing Bar, Garden Market, Dividends, Martin or Harris, there’s something special about celebrating Wing Wednesday! Celebrate by getting wings in your favorite sauce with a side of celery or carrots.
  4. Miami Ice Gelato
    Handmade ice cream on meal plan … what could be better? Get your favorite flavor and mix-ins. If you don’t have a favorite, try the Miami exclusive Red Brick Bliss ice cream from Young’s Dairy!
  5. The Q
    It’s only been here for this school year, but The Q has quickly become a fan favorite. Get your favorite barbecue dishes and sides. Don’t forget about the loaded nachos or barbecue flatbread pizza!
  6. La Mia Cucina
    La Mia is Miami’s very exclusive sit down restaurant. Get a chicken parm or a fresh panini and sit with your friends in this classic joint located right in Harris Dining Commons.
  7. Late Night Pulley
    Late night and Pulley Diner. Name a more iconic duo … I’ll wait. Got a hankering for mozz sticks at 2:30 AM? Get them from Pulley; open 24/7 and all on meal plan!
  8. Weekend Brunch
    Throw it back to freshman year Sundays recapping the weekend’s events with your friends in the closest dining hall over a delicious brunch spread. Bring your pals and reminisce on all the classic tales of your time here at Miami.
  9. Garlic Bites
    Make sure you bring some gum because once you start eating the garlic bites offered at various locations around campus (Garden Commons is a good start), you won’t be able to stop. These addictive bites of warm, garlicky goodness are sure to satisfy.
  10. Favorite Late Night Study Snack
    Up late studying? Grab your favorite late night study snack from King Cafe and relive the countless study dates you’ve had over the years!
  11. Favorite Ice Cream from the Market
    Whether it’s Ben and Jerry’s, Madisono’s Gelato, Halo Top or another one of your favorite brands, get your favorite pint from Market Street at MacCracken or Emporium and enjoy with friends to cool down on a hot, end-of-semester day.
  12. Scoreboard Market
    Scoreboard Market was a student favorite even before it underwent renovation with Martin Dining Hall last year. It has quickly become a student favorite again, offering all your favorite to-go food making it a great trip down memory lane, especially for those who are graduating. Mini corn dogs? Spicy chicken sandwich? Whatever you fancy, snap a pic and send it our way while you sit back and enjoy Scoreboard’s great variety of a la carte delicacies.

Local Vendor Day (Spring 2017) Recap

Hosted at Market Street at MacCracken once a semester, Local Vendor Day is a day where local vendors – whose products are sold out of Market Street – visit Miami University, giving students the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful people behind their favorite on-campus, local products. There are also plenty of free samples!

On April 20, Market Street hosted the spring rendition even as rain clouds loomed above. Students joined us outside Market Street, spoke with our vendors in attendance and enjoyed free samples including chips and salsa, fresh cilantro, gelato and sorbet, chocolates and other tasty sweets. We were also joined by the Pineridge Partners, a local band from Somerville, who provided a lovely soundtrack for the event.

New This Semester: Dividends, Sushi & Valentine’s Baskets

As we settle into a new semester, we continue to look at the newest happenings in Miami University dining. Last week, we published the first of our three-part blog series, breaking down the breakfast-centric news. Now, we get into some of our other exciting announcements this spring including extended Dividends hours, the return of a student favorite and a Valentine’s Day treat that you don’t want to miss!

Dividends Hours

Everybody loves Dividends and this semester, you’ll have more time to enjoy it! Located in the beautiful Farmer School of Business, Dividends features a wide variety of delicious dining options including soups, paninis, coffee/tea, the Asian Market station and more. Of course, you can’t forget the Dividends salads either, which are a campus favorite.

This semester, you will have an extra hour to get your fill at Dividends with the popular dining spot staying open an hour later! Last semester, Dividends closed at 4pm on weekdays (and at 2:30pm on Friday), but in an effort to better accommodate afternoon classes — and your Dividends cravings — Dividends will be open until 5pm Monday through Thursday this semester. Please note that Dividends will still close at 2:30pm on Friday.

So, if you are looking for a Dividends salad after your afternoon class lets out, swing by and enjoy your favorite Dividends food!

Dividends Hours of Operation (complete hours)

Monday-Thursday 7:45am – 5pm
Friday 7:45am – 2:30pm

Sushi On Campus

Sushi is back!

This semester beckons the return of sushi on campus, so if you’ve been missing your favorite between-class snack, rejoice! Sushi is available across campus at Emporium, Bell Tower Market, Dividends, Market Street at MacCracken, King Cafe and Tea Hive.

Stop by any of those locations, look for Sushi Kabar and get your sushi fix!

Me to You Valentine’s Day Baskets

Treat that special someone in your life to a Valentine’s Day basket, featuring an array of sweet treats that show how much they mean to you!

Recapping Local Vendor Day (Fall 2016)

Twice a year, Market Street at MacCracken hosts Local Vendor Day, where local vendors visit Miami University, giving students the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful people behind their favorite on-campus, local products. And, of course, there are free samples!

The fall rendition, on October 6, was no different. Bathed in the sunlight from a beautiful fall day, 11 vendors set up tables and spoke with students about their products while the Pineridge Partners, a local band from Somerville, played music.

Burgers, gelato, chocolate, candy, baked goods and more were available to sample, but those products are readily available for students now. All the vendors sell out of Market Street at MacCracken!

So, learn a little more about the vendors who attended the event, and be sure to stop by Market Street to purchase their incredible local products!

Bob Thurston, Miami professor of history emeritus, buys and roasts the finest possible green coffee beans to ensure excellent flavor, subtlety and character with each cup of coffee. The coffee is available at Market Street.


Chubby Bunny Bakery

Chubby Bunny Bakery served up samples of its delicious gluten-free and vegan-baked goods, specifically their pumpkin muffins and chocolate chip cookies. Chubby Bunny Bakery products are made with organic ingredients and can be purchased out of Market Street.


Grandola Granola

Grandola Granola brought samples of its wonderful gourmet granola. The granola is nut-free, vegan and made by hand in small batches with organic and local ingredients. Grandola Granola is sold out of Market Street.

Top 10 Most Popular Menu Items from Spring Semester

There are 11 different locations on campus, offering a wide array of food. From the epicenter of student activity at Armstrong, to King Cafe and Dividends, there are a variety of flavors available to students across the Miami University campus.

That got us thinking. What are the most popular meals on campus?

Without further ado, let’s take a look back at the spring semester and countdown the top 10 most popular menu items at our a la carte locations.

10. Spicy Chicken Sandwich

The spicy chicken sandwich gets the countdown rolling at No. 10. Available at Pulley Diner, Bell Tower Place and Garden Market, as well as buffet locations on occasion, the spicy chicken sandwich is a tasty choice that students flock to. Keep tabs on our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts next year so you don’t miss out on spicy chicken sandwich specials, like the one we had at Encounter this past semester.

9. Burger with Fries

This classic meal is available across campus, but Encounter, Pulley Diner and Bell Tower Place are the primary culprits for this ranking. Be sure to try a smash-style burger from Pulley Diner, or head over to Encounter for a local burger, fresh from Oxford’s Reserve Run Family Farm.

8. Chicken Fingers

You knew chicken fingers would find a way on to this list. After all, you can’t go wrong with chicken fingers! They can be found across campus, particularly at the likes of Pulley Diner and Bell Tower Place.

7. 16oz Gourmet Coffee

Coffee is the life-blood of the college student and this ranking supports that thought process. Whether just waking up or preparing for a late study session, coffee is a go-to on campus. King Cafe, Miami Ice, Tea Hive, Garden Market and our new Starbucks (located at Maplestreet Station) are the primary coffee destinations, although it is available at other locations across campus.

6. Deli Sandwich

Deli sandwiches were the sixth most popular item from the spring semester. Available at Haines’ Boulangerie, Delish, King Cafe and Bell Tower Place (along with different wraps at other locations), the deli sandwich has a wide reach. While all the locations mentioned allow you to customize your own, which is hard to pass up, be sure to try the deli stations at the buffet locations too!

5. Banana

Checking in at No. 5 is perhaps the most surprising of the top 10; the banana. Yep, that’s right, the banana was the fifth most popular item across campus during the spring semester. Bananas are smart choices when you’re looking for a snack or need something on your way to class and can be found all over campus. They are nutrient-rich and have been linked to a variety of health studies as a wonderful addition to any diet. Plus, they are a great source of potassium for those of you who are hitting the gym!

4. RedHawk Water

We like to share with you the importance of drinking lots of water, so it’s good to see water amongst the top items from the spring. Like bananas, water is available across campus and is a great thing to get more of in your diet. Water could be even higher on this list, as this doesn’t even account for SmartWater or some of the other brands that are sold on campus.

RedHawk water is another item that can be found across campus, particularly at our market locations like Market Street at MacCracken.

3. Dividends Salad

At No. 3, we have the beloved Dividends salad from — you guessed it — Dividends! Trader’s Greens salads are available at Dividends, Americas and Haines’ Boulangerie, but salads are also available at buffets. We’d be remised if we didn’t at least mention the popular dressing of choice; the delicious sweet herb vinaigrette that certainly helped the Dividends salad in these rankings.

2. Pizza

Pizza makes the world go round, so it’s only fitting that it jumps in here as the No. 2 most popular item of the spring semester. Pizza is available at Sundial, Red Brick Pizza and Bell Tower Place, but is also available at La Mia Cucina, through LMC Pizza Delivery and at buffet locations (slices at Garden Commons and personal flatbread at Western Dining Commons).

1. Stir Fry

And at No. 1 is… stir fry! Stir Fry is available at Mein Street, Bell Tower Place and Pacific Rim and is clearly a campus favorite. Stir fry can offer some great health value and is simply delicious. If you’d like to get a taste of the top item from this spring, it can be found at the above a la carte locations (Mein Street is open this summer) or is available at Garden Commons buffet as well!

Local Vendor Day Spring 2016

Whether it’s an old family recipe, a unqiue approach to their preparation, or just an interest in offering something different, local products have a special place in our heart stomach.

Local Vendor Day, held twice a year at Market Street at MacCracken, is an event where local vendors come to Miami University’s campus and share their products with a student body that values local.

On Wednesday’s spring rendition of this event, there were free samples ranging from candy, chocolates and gelato to burgers, salsa, hummus and vegan grahams. Students had the opportunity to meet the people behind the products, which are made by hand with the freshest of ingredients and – best of all – the full-sized portions are available just inside at the market!

Chickpea Chicks

Chickpea Chicks was offering up samples of their small batch, artisanal hummus and leading guests on a “hummus tour” from Toasted Sesame, all the way to Wasabi Green Onion (with Lemon Zowie, Smokin! and Cincy Style in between). Their hummus is gluten free, dairy free, vegan, has no preservatives and is available at Market Street!

Madisono’s Gelato

Madisono’s Gelato attended with some of their delicious Carmello & Sea Salt Gelato. Their delicious chocolate products, specifically their chocolate cover pretzels, were available at Local Vendor Day for sampling, and boy were they good. Be sure to get your chocolate fix by picking up some Winan’s chocolates from Market Street!

Market Street at MacCracken – 3-6pm

This is our second Local Vendor Day of the school year with the first taking place on a beautiful day back in October. The event is a great opportunity to meet some of the brilliant people behind some of the wonderful local products that can be purchased at Market Street at MacCracken. Our guests, including Grandola Granola, The Organic Farm at Bear Creek, Windy Acres, Winan’s Chocolates and Coffee, Heather’s Goodies, Madisono’s Gelato, Chickpea Chicks, Ruby’s Chocolates and Reserve Run Farm, are super friendly and more than happy to discuss their products with you!

Oh, and there are free samples of like… everything. Did you catch that? FREE.

Breads & Spreads

Harris Dining Center – 5-8pm

Breads & Spreads is back! Featuring a variety of appetizers, including local humus and salsa, plus pretzels and pita, this event is about the under-appreciated first course. We will be serving BBQ chicken dip, funfetti dip and other dips, sauces and foods for dipping.

We will also have one of our chefs there helping students create their own dip! Students can “make & take” their creation to-go to save for later!

Ice Cream Extravaganza

Okay… we will give you one guess on what this event is about…

Of course! Ice cream!

As an end of the year celebration (and break from the textbooks), we are throwing an Ice Cream Extravaganza! Students will be able to enjoy some tasty gelato from our very own Miami Ice, but we will also have guests from Madisono’s Gelato and Young’s Jersey Dairy there serving some of their delicious gelato and ice cream!

Madisono’s Gelato, out of Cincinnati, is hand-crafted and features a variety of delicious, unique, artisanal flavors. Madisono’s, both gelato and sorbet, can be purchased, by the pint, at Market Street at MacCracken.

Young’s Jersey Dairy supplies local ice cream for the milkshakes available at Encounter. Young’s Jersey Dairy, located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, also provides much of the ice cream used during different dining events or specials across campus. Uhh… yeah… this is going to be good.

7 Tips for Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Zombie Dinner, hosted at Harris Dining Hall on Tuesday, April 5 from 5-8pm, is rapidly approaching and that means preparations must be made. So, when the zombie hordes descend on campus, how will you keep things together? Seek shelter at Harris and follow our seven tips for zombie survival!

How to Avoid Contracting Zombie Virus

1. Wash your hands

Frankly, this tip should be something everyone is already doing, regardless of impending zombie doom. However, the stakes get raised in a zombie scenario. Keep your hands clean and clear, so you don’t come down with a case of the “must eat brraaainnnsss…”

If you need to find some hand soap or run out, you can always grab some, along with other essential items/snacks, from Market Street at MacCracken.

2. Use the buddy system

Two is better than one during a zombie outbreak. Think about it; two pairs of eyes and ears help respond to threats, you can work together to collect supplies and your combined intelligence helps with problem-solving. Just be sure that you’re faster than your friend because, after all, you don’t have to outrun the zombies, just your buddy in a pinch.

On April 5, be sure to use the buddy system on your way to Harris Dining Hall. Use teamwork to increase your chances of making it to shelter safely.

3. Eat healthy

If you need to run, you had better be feeling as fresh and spry as possible. Eating junk food will slow you down and could make you “junk food” for a zombie. Stop by our dining locations and take advantage of the healthy meals offered to get the energy you need to make a run for it.

4. Avoid infected individuals

5. Don’t fight

We get it. You’re young and feel invincible, but that doesn’t mean you should fight a zombie. They don’t feel pain, are a walking biohazard and don’t understand the concept of a “fair fight”.

6. Run!

When facing the impending doom that is zombies, you will need to run and run fast. Get over to the Rec today and get your workout on to get into apocalypse shape.

7. Seek shelter

You don’t know where or what is safe during a zombie apocalypse, but in this case, safety is only a short walk away (lucky you). Seek shelter at Harris Dining Hall on Tuesday, April 5.  We’re serving dinner to our fellow survivors from 5-8pm.

Farewell Patisserie

For the past two years, Patisserie has been a staple of Maplestreet Station, offering students with a destination, rite with delicious pastries and sweets. Muffins, donuts, chocolate croissants, cupcakes, chocolate and Starbucks drinks were student favorites when celebrating a good grade, a completed week or simply that they woke up in time for their 8 AM.

Now, Patisserie has officially closed so renovations can begin for the opening of Starbucks next year. Thank you for all the support everyone has shown Miami’s pastry and sweets destination over the past couple years.

What Now?

Many of Patisserie’s sweets and pastries have already made their way over to Haines’ Boulangerie in the Armstrong Student Center. Beginning this Fall Semester, Haines’ expanded their bakery items, many of which coming from Patisserie. Want a Mint Chocolate Chip Cupcake, or are you craving a Chocolate Croissant? Haines’ Boulangerie has you covered. Coffee is most easily found next door (okay, not technically next door) at Maplestreet’s First Stop. Of course, Miami Ice and King Cafe are still wonderful coffee destinations. If you also find yourself looking for some Winans Fine Chocolate (Dayton, Ohio), you can get your fix at MacCracken Market where Winans is sold.

Starbucks

As mentioned above, Starbucks is on their way and will be renovating the Patisserie space over the next couple months to prepare to open sometime early next year. It will be fully-licensed, meaning that it will be a full-blown Starbucks, with all the items you would find at any official Starbucks shop!

So Starbucks’ fans rejoice and wish Patisserie a fond farewell after a wonderful two years of gracing our tastebuds with so many delicious sweets.
